User replaceable batteries do not require phones that are “risky” to use “in a light drizzle”. Decent IP ratings are possible even with those. It is just a question of good design. But such design can’t be really expected by companies pushing glass phone backside for no other reason than that they are prone to break.

I still don’t get what is funny about it even now that you say it is a joke, though. To me it sounds like jesting you’d send a donation to Palantir to celebrate whatever. But it could be also just my lack of humour.
There are two possibilities. Either the right torque is critical for successful repair. In which case skill is required with simple equipment that cannot be expected from a simple consumer, or the torque has such a high tolerance that the error margin is what a regular screw driver use would comply with, and therefore no torque has to be specified in the repair manual, other than maybe qualitative statements.
I don’t know the legislation word by word but I do know it requires that the repair is possible without specialised equipment. How should a simple consumer without special tools apply a precise torque.
Changing a phone battery should be simpler than repairing a car and the regulation also requires it to be simpler.

Requiring specific torque values are certainly violating the regulation as that would either require specialised tools are expertise that can’t be expected from regular customers. It also is not necessary for securing water and dust protection. Single use seals are fine as the focus is repair, not battery capacity extension vua battery swap.
We will see bug this regilation has already real impact today. The new Neo from Apple is surprisinglx modular and its battery easy to replace with nothing more than s screw driver. Previous laptops were horrendous in this regard. Of course, that is only because Apple found its love for repairability and is not already preparing for the above regulation. Turns out also modern phone batteries can be easily replaceable. You’ll see in a year.

What profit? The more customers they have the higher their losses are and there is no magic solution in sight that would cut down costs by that much to change that. Some incremental improvement won’t cut it.
Destroying is possibly exaggerated but this harsh restructuring program, together with large scale firings of competent researchers, will likely lead to an amputation of the research program. This halfway to complete destruction, in the best of cases and much closer to it if incompetence and malign administration get their way.

Brave New World is sinister but it is more of a “hell is paved with good intentions” story, while 1984 is straight hell with no good good intentions anywhere, the only aim is to secure a regime, from which no one is even really benefitting a lot. I mean the elite does have a materialistically better life but hardly a lavish one while being actually the least free. It is not clear but I always liked to think that there is no real “big brother”, no real, guy at the top. The system is just kept up by some double thinkers at the top. Fully exchangeable, with as little freedom as anyone else.
The thing in Brave New World is, that those rejecting the regime are actually free to go. I always found that the world outside was portrayed in a pretty exaggerated way, but one can also believe that this was possible mainly propaganda by the regime itself. Either way, people could leave if they wanted forsake the comfy life and experience struggle and freedom. Even then, when choosing that, their lives would have been materially probably still better than those in 1984.
Like I said, I believe we are heading towards a combination of Brave New World and 1984. The latter was too harsh, there is a benefit in letting people enjoy some things, give them something they can use to forget things. The Third Reich for example figured out along the way. That indoctrination movies were counter productive and rejected by the population. However, harmless entertainment movies, with no or maybe only a mild propagandistic twist helped them much more. People rejected the former but welcomed the latter, so that they don’t have to think about the unpleasant stuff. In our modern world, 1984 type surveillance and the death of democracy will be sold by Brave New World style convenience.
We are heading towards a future that will see marks of both dystopias but we would wish to be in a pure Brave New World instead.
To be fair, I always considered Brave New World a much less dire dystopy than 1984. I mean you have a really hard time arguing otherwise. People are not free in either but if you could choose, don’t tell me you’d choose 1984.
But this debate is moot anyway, what we are heading towards is a combination of the worst of 1984 and Brave New World combined.
The Volla Quintus appears to be almost identical, to the Daria Bond that is sold in the UAE. Specs look identical from what I could see and the only difference I can make out are very minor design changes in the back side shell. Volla’s marketing and statements are pretty misleading about that. I am not saying they should not work with Chinese OEMs but they create the impression there was meaningful customisation going on from their side, maybe there was but it looks very much off the shelf from an OEM model.
At the same time Volla also sells Plinius. It is actually a stronger phone, for a lower price than the Quintus but looks very much like the strongest Gigaset phone (which is lower mid-range), so should be actually manufactured in Germany (as much as any phone in Europe could possibly be I think). It is bewildering that they don’t put the Gigaset model square and centre.
Most people are hiding that glass behind TPU. It is pretty pointless other than being a durability weak point. You don’t need glass for wireless charging. You do know that there are alternatived to metal, do you any they don’t need to feel cheap either.
