While not quite exactly, the situation you’re describing isn’t too far off from some of the ways people have lived historically. I 10/10 recommend reading The Dawn of Everything if you’re interested. Some of that research really changed my thoughts about what is possible.

For this knob, at least, they are if you respect the autonomy of all people. Unless you’re looking for the total freedom of action of the despot (and expect to be the one in a position to enjoy it), I fail to see how any system that makes a belief verboten can be described as free, let alone truly so.

While I am an atheist, I no more desire the forcible eradication of religion than I do the instantiation of theocracy and I sure as shit wouldn’t count either as a milestone on the road to True Freedom.
