Programming@programming.dev•Are there actually good clients for mailing lists? [Answered: No]
1·3 days agoNo, I thought that was a separate question precisely because I don’t see a connection between merge requests and mailing lists.

Programming@programming.dev•Are there actually good clients for mailing lists? [Answered: No]
7·3 days agoI don’t currently use mailing lists but when I did, I found Thunderbird very usable. Just set up a filter to move each list’s messages to a separate folder.
For merge requests, doesn’t the default GitLab web interface do those things already …?

Programming@programming.dev•I keep tripping over “true, false, true”
111·6 days agoThat’s why IntelliJ shows you, in these kinds of cases, the names of the parameters where the function is called…
There are also languages, like Scala and Swift, with named parameters, which also solve this problem.

Linux@programming.dev•If Current Trends Continue, Linux Will be a Dominant OS in ~10 Years
101·7 days agoWindows becoming a Linux distribution.
not what I want, I want Windows (as in, the existing Windows codebase) to become FOSS, if that happened, we would no longer need to care about anyone switching to Linux, in fact I might then install a FOSS Windows myself
I remember already playing it through Wine in like 2009 or so, so all that is new is that it’s now a decompiled version.

11·8 days agoLaws that you cannot enforce without looking at people’s private communications are, in my mind, very likely to be laws that should probably not exist anyway in a free society. Crimes that actually harmed another person have, you know, a victim who can testify to the police or in court that the crime happened, and if you have that, what do you need to look at encrypted communications for?
The National Assembly killed it, with the Macronist deputies, the left, and even the Rassemblement National voting it down.
huh, at least one good thing happening somewhere in the world

Programming@programming.dev•Why do native UI frameworks suck so much?
11·8 days agoI haven’t seriously used it myself, but maybe Qt Quick is somewhat like you’re looking for?
To any local business owner reading this: entering your business on OpenStreetMap is completely free of charge and will cause it to be found on many apps on many platforms. (I use it myself when looking for shops or restaurants in unfamiliar areas.) You’ll also do some good for the world by supporting infrastructure that serves humanity as a whole instead of one company.

4·14 days agoThe Internet really does threaten the people who are in power. They are currently realizing it and doing what they can to stop it. I just hope the Internet ends up winning. I used to be fairly optimistic about this in the mid-2010s when I hadn’t been hearing very much from the copyright industry anymore… then, in the late 2010s, attacks on the free and open Internet really started to get serious. I wonder how much they will escalate.
Shouldn’t there be some constitutional requirement, maybe under “due process” theory or otherwise, that US state laws cannot apply to anyone who has no way of knowing that they are even doing something (in this case: serving customers) in that state? Has anything similar been litigated before?

12·14 days agoDo you really think that you will get better answers on non-topical questions from these chatbots than from generic LLMs that are free to use anyway?
because when I wrote the above comment, around 80% or 90% of my lemmy homepage was just your posts, which felt kinda spammy
bro are you just mass-crossposting things from reddit or what? Those camel case titles aren’t really common here, you know.

Privacy@programming.dev•Epstein Elites are Policing the Internet to protect the children!
59·15 days agoYes, but we shouldn’t have to mention Epstein in order to make our point. That just makes our side look dumber. Epstein died in 2019 and none of this has anything to do with him at all.
We should be opposing it because we want a free society based on individual rights in which people are allowed to speak, communicate, associate with anyone they want about anything they want.

Opensource@programming.dev•The Dutch government just built its own GitHub
61·18 days agoThat is good news…
So, uh, I assume the Dutch government will heavily push back against any ideas to ban social media for young people in the EU? After all, a public forgejo instance is also “social media”, and surely they will find it too costly to implement an age check there? Riiiight?

schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.detoHacker News@lemmy.bestiver.se•The AI Industry Is Discovering That the Public Hates ItEnglish
11·20 days agoThat’s probably true. Maybe “horrible” wasn’t the right adjective, I was thinking more of things that AI is completely unsuitable for. I don’t know whether that’s true for the things Palantir does. I am absolutely certain it is for customer support!

7·21 days agoRight now I can access it. They seem to have a status page https://fhf-lemmyworld.instatus.com/ that says that earlier today there were some problems for approximately an hour? I don’t have more information than that.

I see. Not familiar with any good interface for that.
