  • It’s very similar, part of the “threadiverse”, Fediverse services intended for Reddit-like UIs, like Lemmy and kbin/Mbin. Both use ActivityPub so you can read&post either on either.

    They both have their pros and cons. Piefed has better moderation tools, multi-communities, and combines crossposts, among some other things; downsides, it’s written in Python which is… weird, though early metrics suggest it uses less resources. Lemmy is more established, has better app support, and is written in Rust, which, prestigious. But honestly, a lot of it comes down to community and politics.

  • Some of these have been for privacy and FLOSS ideology over the past 5 years, but anyway…

    Fully deleted:

    Windows -> Linux (mostly; have a Windows VM I don’t use and needed hubby’s Windows installation for the MSM download tool for some old phones a while back).

    Instagram -> nothing

    WhatsApp -> Signal, Matrix/Element, SMS (friends understood, lost some community groups and annoyed others)

    LineageOS w/GAPPS -> LineageOS for MicroG -> DivestOS (RIP) -> GrapheneOS (-> trying to move to UBPorts Ubuntu Touch)

    Twilio Authy -> Aegis

    BitWarden -> KeePass (this one was purely because disentangling from US services and it still hurts, ❤BitWarden)

    Google Maps -> Organic Maps + browser Google Maps without location

    Still have but use very little:

    Facebook -> nothing (marketplace and some niche old-person hobby advice)

    Gmail -> Proton -> Tutanota (lingering registrations, occasionally collaboration through Google Drive)

    Google Drive -> Hetzner-hosted Nextcloud (for calendar, contacts, backups, etc)

    Reddit -> Lemmy -> Piefed (kept for some hobby groups I might need to ask sometime)

    Youtube -> Arte, local public TV streaming (YLE Areena) (for what I first check for passive entertainment)

    In addition to Polar and Suunto, Finland also has Ōura on the ring side. I tested their V1 long ago, and was impressed. The ring form seemed to allow for better measurement of heart rate to the point of reliably using HRV for “readiness” predictions, and temperature to the point of possibly being applicable for basal temperature for ovulation detection, something I doubt any watch could do as accurately simply because of form factor. Then again, I haven’t tracked progress lately.

    If you are more concerned about your money and data staying in the EU than the brand, I’d also suggest a used device supported by Gadgetbridge; I used to have good luck with used Mi Bands (newer models may not work, or at least need installing the default app and digging up a code).

  • I got my diagnosis under a year ago, and the way I’ve intellectualised it to myself is:

    I’m in the top 5-10% for scatterbrained-ness or enthusiasm, or bottom 5-10% for working memory or personal project completion.

    That’s it. If I was among the 5-10% shortest people, I wouldn’t have a “height deficit disorder”, but learning some tricks would be helpful, there are tools (or in our case meds) to help, and I’d possibly need accommodations sometimes. Ideally the world would work on universal design principles and include the extremes, but unfortunately it isn’t so. Same principle applies.

  • Question about autistic friends, how do they/you feel when someone politely and moderately informed-ly disagrees with your take on the topic of choice?

    Personally I love it when people question or even disagree with me, yay learning something new or a new perspective, but sometimes the intensity makes expressing disagreement or “uh, actually, that’s a common misconception but…” feel offensive.

  • Fuck. Mine is free to me through public healthcare because Nordics, yearly masks and so far one replacement included.

    Have you looked into DIY versions (yes I know, project graveyard) or Chinese ones? Long ago before I had access to a “real” one, I got a BMC APAP w/ humidifier & oximeter (not needed for use) from Wish for maybe 350€, because the risk of toxic fumes felt worth it and it still works just fine, even if it smells plastic-y after non-use.
