  • Congrats to the new admins!

As regards instant recall, I’m new here (but not new to lemmy and the broader fediverse) and don’t feel I have much of a voice regarding how things are run. I also don’t have much experience with the concepts of anarchism and the idea of instant recall is new to me, but I do have a lot of experience in governance for large organisations.

That said, I have some concerns.

Primarily, I can’t see how including yourself can work in practice. Even if 70% of voters decide that your actions are contrary to the desires of the instance, you will be confident that your own actions are necessary and justified (otherwise you wouldn’t have taken those actions). You’ve already acknowledged that you’re a foul play failsafe. So I guess I’m saying, from your perspective any motion to recall your mandate is very likely to appear to be foul play.

Sadly, I’m conditioned to suggest having a robust code of conduct and a committee to refer breaches to, but I suspect that is not the way of anarchism.

Regardless, I’m very happy to support this instance and look forward to seeing where you take it.

  • Hopefully it generates some stink around the LNP in the coming election.

It’s just bonkers how many people vote against their own interests in that regard. My parents are rusted on liberal voters but they collect an age pension from centrelink.

Some headlines around the corrupt punishment of poor people last time we had an LNP government sprinkled through the coming months won’t hurt. I mean they probably won’t help either I guess.

  • For sure there are plenty of people that don’t produce any real value in their work, but that’s been the case since forever and they’re hard to weed out because in some ways their full time job is to ensure their ongoing employment.

As in most things, it’s a question of extent.

The most accurate statement you can make is that AI will make “most” office employees “more” efficient.

The thing is, this has been happening with every technological advance for hundreds of years.

  • Yeah so I have a son and daughter who are too young to encounter this stuff but I’m definitely concerned about it. I don’t have any experience at all in navigating this type of dynamic.

I suspect that in the coming years I’m going to realise just how difficult it is to maintain a relationship with your kids where you have some level of influence while simultaneously earning some level of respect, camaraderie, kinship, and ultimately have them share things with you. It kinda sounds impossible honestly.

I know that the fitness angle is also a recruitment tool used by these organisations. You know, come to the gym, learn to work out, learn kickboxing or whatever, acquire role models, be influenced.

I guess one strategy is to encourage relationships with better role models so they have a point of reference when they encounter someone with ulterior motives and differing views.

  • Ooh good one. I wonder what the flat earth explanation for this is.

Anyhow, the persistent belief in something like a flat earth isn’t really a question of evidence.

To most people the way we understand the world around us is through the scientific method. As in I have not personally observed the results of testing vaccines on thousands of people to ensure that they are safe, but others have and others have reproduced their findings, so I’m happy to accept their published assertions.

However, there’s plenty of people for whom the scientific method is merely one belief system amongst many, and you can simply choose which group resonates with you.

Additionally science tells us all sorts of unpleasant things about ourselves that we don’t really want to hear. Why would I want to listen to “science” telling me I need to exercise more when this nice lady on facebook tells me that this crystal can realign my chakras and restore my health.

  • I’m deep in phase 2, just building up to phase 3 I think.

ADHD memes do seem to resonate with me, but I’m not sure I experience the deleterious effects to a severe enough extent to really have diagnosable ADHD.

Even if I am, I’m not sure stimulants would be the right way to go, and I’m already doing my best with ADHD style interventions to support productivity et cetera.
