Gnome mobile is definitely pretty slick, but last time I used it, it had some pretty major flaws, like being limited to a 6 digit pin using the number pad and exposing contacts in a locked state. IMO right now, phosh is a more complete choice, which is what OP said they wanted to use anyways.

This is fucking awesome. I have been seriously considering building something similar, but the high cost and uncertainty of functionality with 4g modems is putting me off. My plan is to use a cm4 with this 2.8 inch carrier board from Waveshare that also has a 480p 2.8 inch touchscreen, since I want something that could actually fit in my pocket.
To make up for the small screen, I would use something like the fairberry so that I don’t need to use an on-screen keyboard, so the final device would have a similar layout to the Blackberry q10. I was planning on using this SIM7600G modem from Waveshare meant for a pi-zero since I want to be able to actually use LTE, SMS and take phone calls on whatever I build.
Fortunately, where I live, VoLTE is not required, but I feel like the mandate of VoLTE in other regions means that my modem should also be VoLTE capable.
You might want to look into postmarketos, since they have support for the Pi and it might make working with Phosh and the modem a bit easier.
EDIT:
I would also probably just use a battery bank that’s cheap with around 37wH of capacity for powering the thing. I would extract the battery and BMS from the casing to reduce the size and weight since it would go in a 3d printed case anyways.

2·6 months agodamn, this looks like a pretty cool project. I’ll give it a whirl on my Pinephone when I get the chance.

11·6 months agodamn, that’s kinda a big deal. FP4 seems like it’s already relatively well supported, so the camera support makes it even better. Too bad that the FP4 is kinda hard to get here in North America without spending a crazy amount of money.
Don’t get me wrong, LineageOS is great, I use it myself. However, LineageOS is primarily made as a way to still receive feature updates on phones no longer supported by the manufacturer. This means that they don’t do things like switch DNS checks from Google to someone else, for example.

7·7 months agoNo clue. I do find their marketing a bit fishy considering that they don’t mention that they use Halium on their own website. However, it looks like they preinstall Waydroid for you, which is an application that runs an Android container to run Android apps. I have no idea if or how well passthough of GPS works or how hard it would be to get Google Play services.
While yes. Lineage is pretty cool, this seems like news better for the android community imo.
Maybe look into the Oneplus 6? It has a dual sim slot and can run Postmarketos, though I have no idea whether the software can handle dual sim and stuff like VoLTE probably won’t work.
Considering the sheer magnitude of iPhones that have been manufactured, this is kinda a big deal.
Wifi works, Bluetooth works, Audio works most of the time, but can be a bit weird sometimes, GPS requires some weird flashing of android versions that is beyond me, camera works but is cropped and wonky, and fingerprint senor and usb-otg don’t work at all.
Calls and SMS work fine, I just have to disable automatic suspend. I’ve never tested Data so I don’t know if that works and I have no idea if VoLTE works, though I don’t think I need that for calls here in Canada.
A Oneplus 6 running PostmarketOS.
I find it amusing that I don’t “sideload” at all on my linux phone, rather, basically everything I want is already in the repos.
Yeah, Waydroid is just an application and will run on normal amd64 and arm64 linux devices just fine. Having it setup from the factory is just a nice quality of life feature.
I got it from https://blog.luigi311.com/furilabs-flx1/. Furi labs specifically links to this article on their website, so I would assume it’s factually correct.
I don’t think I’ve ever even used Signal’s call features, I forgot it even had them lol.
Flare is good enough that I use it daily. The fact that it cannot act as Signal’s “Primary Device” does kinda suck, but I just have a separate Android phone that I keep around for bullshit like that. It definitely is annoying that Flare only can see messages after you add it as a secondary device though.
I’m not really interested in a phone that runs linux on top of Android software, like what furi labs does. They use Halium, which makes it more like phones running Ubuntu touch or Droidian like what Volla does rather than something like the pinephone or librem V.
