The Democrats are still stuck in this post-Clinton seniority mindset where they unofficially pick a candidate before primaries even begin, based on who has been around the longest and who has held the highest position. That’s because it’s not an argument. He’s presupposing the frame that his rabid supporters are going to use, which is he only lost because he was goofing on the sham debate on purpose. He knows that his base is ride or die, and whatever he does on the debate stage isn’t going to change that. He’s explicitly giving them the line to use.
