Australia@aussie.zone•Victoria has made public transport free – NSW hasn’t. Has there been any difference in uptake?English
1·6 days agoWhy the sarcasm? Just because I don’t use a service does not mean I’m a not interested in discussing what is happening in society. I don’t drive trucks but I’ve also put up a post about electric trucks and other similar posts. If we were all just interested in what affects us personally our society would be even more selfish and dysfunctional than capitalism encourages it to be. Mate, you seem to have a hate problem. Hate is bad for mental and physical health.

2·6 days agoWow, pretty impressive! With the petrol situation not going to improve any time soon and climate action desperately needed this is an opportune time for governments to get input from commuters such as yourself throughout Australia and start transforming our PT systems according to the needs of different population centres.
I think your last point about the faulty one CBD model was already recognised long ago. Sydney has 3 major business/admin centres: city centre, North Sydney and Parramatta. I haven’t lived in Sydney for a while so there may be more for all I know. There’s probably similar set ups in other cities but I don’t personally know.

Australia@aussie.zone•Victoria has made public transport free – NSW hasn’t. Has there been any difference in uptake?English
4·6 days agoI reckon that happens to a lot of people. Australia has always been really car-centric unless you are in the city and even there outer suburbs often don’t have much choice.

1·6 days agoFleur, I don’t know if you’re talking to me again or not, but just in case you are, I live in a rural area where buses are few and far between and I’d have to drive to get to a bus if I wanted one, so I have to use a car. Luckily I don’t have to do much driving.

4·7 days agoAnd it needs to do that by improving, not by simply adding barriers to alternatives.
What improvements would you recommend? This is important. More ideas need to be discussed.

5·7 days agoIt may be difficult for some to work out what they want if they have not worked out who they are in a deeper sense.

Australia@aussie.zone•Gen Z men want babies more than gen Z women. What’s behind the 'cluck gap'?English
1·7 days agoBut that’s the problem, many don’t know what they want exactly. This can happen to genz women too. Society is shifting all the time in unprecedented ways. What you may want today may not be what you want in 5 years’ time. I’d say it’s important to work out who you are and why you want what you want.

Australia@aussie.zone•More Australians are self-prescribing natural remedies, but are they always safe?English
1·7 days agoBeing well informed about what you’re taking is important whether you’re taking medically prescribed medicine or nature-based supplements and remedies. Having said that, people dying from prescription drug reactions, dangerous interactions, errors, etc, are high while there are few to none from taking natural remedies.
Every so often out comes an article like the above in Australia but a lot less often about the safety of Pharma industry medicines, apart from opioids and depression medications whose effects can be dangerous and lethal. Many would be surprised just how much damage can be done by medically-prescribed medicines.

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•‘There’s people dying for your petrol’: while Israel bombs Beirut, Lebanese Australians feel outrage and fear
7·9 days agoThe Lebanese Australians interviewed in the article have every right to be outraged. Our government says a few weak words while another major, continuing war crime is happening… and it’s ok to sanction Russia but not Israel. What a disgrace!

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•By avoiding means testing, the government is giving handouts to the rich
2·10 days agoThat all being said, I do think governments should try to address inequality as much as possible, so if policies can thread the needle of means testing that is restrained and not punitive while keeping costs reasonable, I’m all for it.

Great article. All of us who can should be looking at ways of growing food by ourselves or with others and organising in our communities. The food situation is not going to improve seeing what is happening supply and climate wise. We must ask our state governments, councils and other local authorities and organisations to support, prepare and set up community gardens and similar systems so that at least the most vulnerable (which will increase) have access to fresh food they can afford. We should no longer just see this as niche practice. We are lucky in Australia we still have quite a lot of open space available which we should use for habitat for native species and to grow food.
