You mean like the Jewish Australians arrested today for standing up against the Israeli government’s ongoing genocide?

I thought this was, yet again, a shit article on the subject from the ABC. A total failure to provide context to explain the ongoing genocide and our government’s support of the genocidal regime that leads to local protests having a very direct, real purpose. Literally no attempt to explain the meaning of the phrase, no contextualising the use of the term “hate speech”. Not even scare quotes around that term.
It’s quite telling that there’s no by-line on the article.
Here’s a better article. It doesn’t go as far as I would like in contextualising it properly, it but it at least does the bare minimum necessary for journalistic integrity.
Also, side note: according to a Facebook post/video by Michael West Media (but not any proper article from them that I could find), those arrested included Jewish Australians.

fr. that’s like…the whole problem.

What was her response?
Edit: and what was the cheer?

I got a summons once while I was overseas on holiday. The deadline to return the form had passed by the time I got back. I sent in the reply envelope anyway explaining the situation.
That was like a decade ago, and I haven’t had the courts ask after me since.

How so?
Han Solo hates snakes?

Big shock.
Walking more popular when walking convenient and comfortable. But seriously, stories about this are important, because councils clearly do need some imports to start doing better.

You know the BBC is brainwashing lefty trash, totally not legitimate
The BBC is not any sort of left. It’s centrist to centre-right.
Its transphobic, pro-genocide, pro-monarchy takes should make that very clear.

Both Lemmy and Piefed support it, though weirdly unlike the alt text field when submitting an image post, this syntax only adds alt text, so only screen readers will see it—users can’t view the text on hover.

Pauline says what most Australians think
This is the real problem IMO. She says what they think. Because they’re racist, and project that onto others, assuming it must be everyone.
I think the best tactic is redirection. They obviously have a lot of anger, and thanks to Hanson and the broader right-wing media climate, that anger gets directed towards immigrants. But if you can seek to redirect the anger where it belongs—to the billionaire class—without actually attempting to call out Hanson in too explicit a way (risking them getting defensive, as you observed, resulting in the backfire effect where they double down and reinforce their previous beliefs), that can help.
I think it’s very notable that One Nation voters tend to preference LNP and Labor at much closer to a 50/50 rate than you might intuitively expect. A lot of them are disillusioned and poorly informed on the issues, rather than being hardcore dedicated True Believers in Hanson’s racist cause. And can be reached, if the anger and fear they quite rightly feel are instead directed somewhere productive.
Not that I’m very good at this, mind you. When I’m exposed to them in real life I’m much more likely to do what you did, or to call them out personally. It’s something I need to get better at.

I replied to the other user showing how markdown image descriptions work. Titles are added with hashes.
# title
## subtitle
Text
### sub-sub title
Etc.

Image descriptions are a thing in markdown. Images are inserted into markdown documents with this syntax:

I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean here. Both markdown and LaTeX are plain text. They’re easily read by a screen reader. Though unless the screen reader is specially-designed for LaTeX support, it may be difficult to comprehend. That’s on the screen reader though, not the document format.

Sure. And 90% of those are writing stuff that would be better off as markdown.

Oh dang, mad respect for owning up to it!
But uhh, would you mind sharing the gist of what you were saying? I’m too late to have seen it.
