OK something that old surely has a serial port on it? If so, look in to “sneakernet” (it’s a technique, not a product) to connect to another computer. I’ve even done networking over a serial port with linux, but there also used to be software just for copying files. That wouldn’t give you a drive image but it would at least back up the software.
A person with way too many hobbies, but I still continue to learn new things.

10·4 months agoSpanned 515 miles, spawned at least 116 air-to-ground strikes during its duration, and lasted about 7 seconds total. The article also mentions the record for longest known lightning arc was 17 seconds!

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•US pulls out of formal peace talks between Ukraine and RussiaEnglish
5·7 months agoI had assumed national treaties would have lawyers pouring over the details to ensure both parties got what they wanted, but it’s good to see some of the details pointed out. Thanks for the update!

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•US pulls out of formal peace talks between Ukraine and RussiaEnglish
21·7 months agoWell if the US is no longer involved in negotiations, then there is zero benefit being offered to Ukraine and thus there is zero reason Zelensky should even consider signing that mineral deal.

2·8 months agoWhy only “most” of the original block characters? There were only 128 characters to begin with, so why did the creator stop?
Of course we all know those “high engagement” numbers are greatly fueled by bots. I wonder what would happen if all news organizations just suddenly stopped posting anything on X and moved over to Mastodon/Bluesky? Seems like you would see real quick who actually wants to follow the information and who just wants an echo chamber.
How long before Musk starts kicking those leaders off because they don’t have a Trumpian attitude? And of course most of the residents of those countries will follow their leaders to a new platform, making twitter completely irrelevant.
Turns out a number of the good reps are on Bluesky. Yesterday I even found Tim Walz has an account there and I’ve seen many from other states tagged in comments.

World News@beehaw.org•Trump wants denuclearization talks with Russia and China, hopes for defense spending cutsEnglish
19·10 months agoWhy? Is he suddenly running scared and realizing just how badly he has crippled the US military and national security, not to mention any hope of counting on our allies to back us up when the threats start coming?
Then again, Trump is gullible enough to actually believe other countries were disarming and would shut down our entire program without a hint of assurances. And then he’d have to tell his MAGAts to be shocked when a few of our cities got nuked because how could anyone have predicted this could happen.

8·10 months agoMan what are the odds??? I just finished the last episode today too! I’ve been dragging along on this last season because, ya know, last season and all, but it did certainly end with quite a bang.
Haha yeah storage capacity just keeps going up fast. Now that you mention it, I do recall the performance on these drives was supposed to be just absolute crap, but it was a massive innovation before chip storage came out. And some day the next big thing will be released and we’ll wonder how we put up with SSD drives.
I have one of the original IBM Microdrives, the 340MB version, sitting here on my desk. Hmm I wonder if I can find anything with a PCMCIA slot to test if this still works?

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•'We can do it the easy way or the hard way,' Trump says to Russia on ending the war in UkraineEnglish
1·11 months agoSounds about right, and Russia is a big one I was thinking of. We’ve given them a reason to want to attack us, they’ve had a chance to see some of our weaponry, and now Trump is doing everything he can to weaken our economy and break the moral of our military, so we shall see what happens.

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•'We can do it the easy way or the hard way,' Trump says to Russia on ending the war in UkraineEnglish
1·11 months agoSure but how many smaller nations have we screwed over in the past? There are plenty who would like a chance to strike back, and if they happened to work together even for a short time it could spread our forces very thin. We could stop most of the attacks, but could we stop all of them?

Ukraine@sopuli.xyz•'We can do it the easy way or the hard way,' Trump says to Russia on ending the war in UkraineEnglish
3·11 months agoThat’s exactly why I’m concerned about his boasts of leaving NATO. The US has made a lot of enemies through our own military actions against other people and nations, and Trump seems to think the US doesn’t need anyone else. Can you imagine if all those countries decide that now we’re vulnerable? 9/11 will look like a cake walk.

41·11 months agoTrump has already stated he is imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, in direct violation of an agreement he himself set up during his first term. On top of that, he’s already threatened the invasion of at least four allied nations. He is showing the world that he has no intention of honoring anything he says, nor respect for any existing relationships with other countries.
Sanctions only work if other nations cooperate. Why would anyone choose to cooperate with someone like this? Trump is acting like the whole world should bow down to him, while the world is laughing in his face.

World News@beehaw.org•Trump signs order to exit World Health OrganizationEnglish
26·11 months agoI read this as a sign that his lack of action during COVID was in fact intentional. He also confirmed his intent for the 25% tariffs on Mexico (which will raise food prices) and on Canada (continuing the problem with new housing being unaffordable). Plus he signed another bill today demanding that US history taught in schools be white-washed of those “troublesome” notions like slavery. Taken all together, it’s obvious that the oligarchy wants the working class to be broke, hungry, homeless, and stupid enough to vote for his type again.
Your king has spoken. Long live the king.
[Edit] More news on the health care front… He’s blaming WHO for his own gross mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, and he has pretty much gutted every program that aims to keep health care and medication prices manageable. Isn’t it funny how someone who ran for office on the idea of making things more affordable for everyone has already in his first day made costs skyrocket? https://www.statnews.com/2025/01/20/trump-executive-orders-health-care-drug-pricing-aca-covid-gender-discrimination/

Heh I managed to jump directly from best-case to worst-case, but hey, that still leaves everything in between as options. :-)
Yeah, speed is everything and there are pcmcia ethernet cards for $10 or less on ebay if OP has that option.
