ReasonableHat@lemmy.worldto Buy European@feddit.uk•EU to exclude US, UK and Turkey from €150bn rearmament fund14·4 months agoThat’s sort of the point… no policy or seemingly priority change from the EU despite the enormous geo-political changes.
ReasonableHat@lemmy.worldto Buy European@feddit.uk•EU to exclude US, UK and Turkey from €150bn rearmament fund64·4 months agoJust to add, the references to Norway and Ukraine were deliberate because they are not in the EU. Also, I don’t think the requirement for third countries to commit to defence pacts with the EU is inherently bad, but it should be just that - a defence pact to meet the most pressing threat Europe faces. Making a defence pact conditional on the UK granting access to its fishing waters is moronic.
ReasonableHat@lemmy.worldto Buy European@feddit.uk•EU to exclude US, UK and Turkey from €150bn rearmament fund56·4 months agoIt is just sad to see the same short-sighted pettiness undermining Europe’s common interest. I’m not sure your specific points hold any water; obviously nobody anywhere in Europe has voted for this in a general election / referendum, and the current UK governing party (which won a large parliamentary election last year) was for remaining in the EU.

ReasonableHat@lemmy.worldto Buy European@feddit.uk•EU to exclude US, UK and Turkey from €150bn rearmament fund1125·4 months agoThis is utter madness in relation to the UK if the EU keeps insisting on including other crap (e.g. fishing rights) in any third country defence agreement. The UK is as much a part of Europe and has as much of an interest in its defence as Norway and Ukraine, for example.
Fair enough. I think the discussion ends there; I cannot use reason to dissuade you from a position that you clearly did not use reason to get yourself into.
So should there be any penalty for lying under oath?
ReasonableHat@lemmy.worldto UK Politics@feddit.uk•UK pledges £2.26bn to Ukraine as Zelensky says it will be used for weapons - latest93·4 months agoNeeded after the US so publicly ended its “leader of the free world” circle-jerk. Ukraine needs to resist long enough, and Europe needs to rearm fast enough, to mitigate disaster. This and other financial support will buy some of that time.
Looks beautiful. Not played one of these for years.
