Because it refuses to work well without constant tinkering.

I picked up a raspberry pi 5 to use as my desktop at home, and tried pi OS, Ubuntu, KDE Plasma, all of which could connect to my home wifi network, but none of which would provide reliable upload or download speeds. Ongoing issues with connection quality to my Bluetooth speaker. Trying to find fixes online is challenging.

I wound up installing android, and everything just works.

  • The quickest way to fix it is to either roll exclusively with the pre-teen class, or as though you are. Lose the option to go HAM.

Most white belts (and far too many upper belts, tbh) can give zero, seven, or ten easily, and will struggle to find the useful learning gears (one through five). It is a work in progress, but we’ll worth the effort.

There’s nothing better for your Jiu-Jitsu than having a wide variety of training partners of all sizes, who know that they’ll get a quality roll out of you every time.

  • Based on your description of what is going on, you need to rethink your entire approach to training. If you want to learn quickly, minimize your injuries, and never run out of training partners who are happy to train with you, you’ll need to learn to love Jiu-jitsu more than you love winning.

You are not being evaluated or trained to go HAM. You winning (or trying to) through intensity and brute force will not be rewarded by your coach, and will not be appreciated by your shrinking pool of willing training partners.

Even if you happen to be significantly stronger than your training partner, you should be looking to find maximal results with minimal effort.

  • Reddit, like Digg before it, was a gathering place, where people could post or consume content, and interact with other users. It was much like a town square, where people can set up their soapbox and bark, or where a person could go and listen, interact, and enjoy.

Reddit is now like the Home Owners Association for that particular town square, and are actively trying to control the entire experience, by acting like they own the soapboxes, and as though the barkers are now obligated to ensure that content is HOA approved.

That kind of neighborhood holds no appeal for me.

Do you know what the difference is between a gnarly blue belt and a shitty new purple belt? Nothing. Someone at your gym has to be the worst purple belt. Why can’t it be you?

You already know how to fix it once you get promoted. If you feel like you aren’t ready, go train until you are. If you feel that your promotion was on time, go train and show how right your coach was to promote you. If you feel that your promotion is long overdue, go train, and show that you’re well on your way to your next belt.

Embrace the grind, and enjoy your purple belt when you get it. Just know that once it starts feeling really comfortable around your waist, you’ll be on deck for your brown belt.
