  • You don’t but it can help with packaging since you don’t need a shaft from the rack to the wheel (which is on different sides depending on region). It also means you can have different steering ratios for different situations. You can have a fast ratio while parking and a slow one on the highway. If you have automated driving, the wheel doesn’t need to turn when the car turns. Although I think all cars with any kind of autonomous driving still turn the wheel.

  • It is a bit lazy. But it’s also a meme and not a thesis. If the purpose is mass communication, resonance is more important than rigor.

More to your point, I don’t think capitalism requires racism but it does require some sort of superiority dynamic within the working class. The more, the better. This takes form in misogyny, racism, ageism, ableism, and pretty much any other discrimination you can think of. All will be propped up by the inherent incentives of capitalism in order to keep the attention of the working class off of the business owners actually causing the problems.

  • To me, this illustrates exactly why “human supervised” autonomous driving makes no sense. Nobody can sit there hour after hour, day after day doing nothing at all and still be ready to intervene in a moments notice. The whole point of autonomous driving is to take away the mental work of driving.

Also, when you’re driving, you have perfect knowledge of your own intentions. If you don’t know the intentions of the system, you’re purely reacting to all of the information presented to you which is a small subset of all information the car sees. Is the car swerving because a kid ran in front when you weren’t looking that way? No way to know in the moment whether a sudden input is life ending or life saving. The only reason supervised autonomous driving is considered acceptable by anybody is because the alternative is for car companies to take responsibility in the event of an accident. Politicians and car companies are happy for some flunky behind the wheel to take the heat.
