I got the itch to have a separate music player from my phone. Became very interested in the Innioasis Y1. It looks like a late model iPod nano (before they went touchscreen; it has the wheel). Bought it and then put the RockBox firmware on it (no simple task if you use Linux, let me tell you). I love it. It’s made me more intentional with my music. Plus I’m acquiring CDs and burning them to my laptop to transfer over to the Y1.

When I was nearing the end of grad school, they asked us to submit any degrees we’d earned to be listed next to our names in the graduation ceremony program. I “left high school early” so I have a GED (and am proud of it). So I listed my degrees as GED, BA.
A few days later the person putting together the programs finds me in the refectory, pulls me aside and quietly asks me “um, GED? Is… is that high school?”
“Sort of,” I reply.
“Uh, yeah… we don’t usually put those in there…”
Still have a GED sharing wall space with my Master’s either way. Win.
I started out with Ubuntu a little over a year ago. Then came an update that removed the ability to change the brightness of my desktop’s monitor. Felt like an Apple move, so I gave Mint another go. Have really enjoyed it (though I’m starting to eye CachyOS since Mint has seemingly decided to comply in advance with the CA age-verification law–haven’t added anything yet, but say they will)
I feel that. Here in Hawai’i a lot of our emergency services, etc. only use Twitter. Finding information can be difficult otherwise. I imagine in some places it’s basically impossible.
Seriously. Why is it so hard to find information about restaurants on the internet? And why can’t you post your damn menu?!
Came here to say this. I left cold turkey almost two years ago and haven’t regretted it. I get way more value out of time spent on Mastodon and Lemmy (and I spend way less time on those platforms than I did on FB or IG). I also use Pixelfed, but most of the posts I see there are of birds, flowers, or moss so I only really go there when I want to look at pretty and relaxing things (especially on Sundays with the #silentsunday posts).
The only way to truly leave entirely is to not look back.

I was kinda like this, adoring fetishizing a life free from material constraints, wearing busted old shoes, etc. Then I worked at a homeless church and that’s when I realized two things: first, I was basically cosplaying as poor; second, every homeless person I talked to basically thought it was stupid to not have things when you otherwise could have them.
The clearest was this one time I grabbed a cup of coffee and sat at one of the breakfast tables with guys. They looked at me like “you’re not eating?” And I said that I wasn’t hungry and that I didn’t want to take a plate away from someone who might’ve needed it. They chastised me heavily. “You could have got your plate and then shared it with all of us, then!” I realized that I had the luxury to turn down food. They saw my torn up shoes as a kind of affectation (which they were, but I couldn’t admit it at the time).
It’s turned me off of a fair bit of folk music, tbh. This whole “get rid of your stuff and be free” sentiment. Yes, reject capitalistic materialism. But the discipline is in having enough. The person with nothing can be just as obsessed with wealth as the person who hoards it.

I was fully prepared to dislike this show (Disco was on shaky ground with me, but I was more or less on board, then they went to the 32nd Century; I was not a fan of that jump at the time and worried that SNW was going to be the only outlier in regards to Disco spin-offs that would be any good), and I felt affirmed in that feeling during the first few minutes of the first episode. But once the tone changed a bit I was happy to watch the second episode. Then we met Tamira and I just kind of fell in love with the show. Then they managed to take something sacred (the Sisko), pair it with my least favorite character (the SAM), and somehow making it a truly great episode AND making me come around on said character (thus proving that Tawny Newsome is an absolute treasure to this franchise–give me a LD/STSA crossover now!).
Data’s face here is like “Commander, you have targeted the warp nacelles on the Reliant and are preparing to fire.”
She reminds me of a few of my professors in both my undergraduate English program and my graduate religious studies program, all of them wonderful and safe-feeling people. She’s the first school chancellor we’ve really seen in Star Trek and she feels very much like a university-level educator to me–with the whole starship command piece being additional to her main job.
What bugged me about Discovery was their need, especially in the later seasons, to have like an affirmation circle in the middle of a mission–frequently when there was a ticking clock of some kind. My wife and I would be yelling at the screen “this is what the debrief is for!”. SNW does this sort of thing really well. As has Starfleet Academy. I’m really digging it.
Thank you! I switched to Linux last year after a few years of flirting with the idea. My main work computer is a 2011 iMac and I got really tired of not being able to run some things and the whole planned obsolescence aspect despite the hardware being perfectly serviceable. So, I went and, I kid you not, borrowed Linux For Dummies from the local library. Prior to this I had no idea what a shell was or even a “distro”. And, honestly, the For Dummies book over complicated Linux a bit. It front-loaded everything and made it way more intimidating than it needed to be (and I’ve been using computers since DOS days and built a PC back in 2000). Which I feel like a lot of Linux guys do as well.
Realized that Linux was lots of things and felt a pull toward Ubuntu, I installed it on the iMac and was instantly in love. After a few months, though, Canonical started pulling some nonsense and making changes to my system with updates like they were Apple. So I hopped over to Mint as I kept reading about how great it was and how “it just works” (a sentiment that brought me to Apple back in 2005). Now I stick Mint on everything. I kind of want to distro hop for the fun of it, but I’ve tested a few on distrosea and haven’t really found anything that draws me away from Mint. Yeah, I’m a bit of a normie. But normies deserve better OSes too!
I think I read it somewhere in a trivia thing on Memory Alpha, but I honestly donʻt remember. But the Progenitors seeded common ancestors with their DNA. Which means that species like the Xindi wouldʻve had Progenitor DNA even though they have a multi-facted evolution with reptillian, primate, and arboreal humanoids…
iirc, in Star Trek the Klingons descend from a crab-like ancestor. I mean, yes, I understand what you’re getting at but I still think it’s kinda cool that Klingons are sort of humanoid crabs
From what I can tell. I did get much better battery results from doing RockBox after a factory reset. (Initially switched it over after having loaded my music onto the device; battery was no good and there were some weird quirks with the file system so I decided to fully reset the device, installed RB, then loaded my music. Noticeable difference!)
