It is stupid easy to get a free .edu account. It will not hamper spammers in the slightest. Even if they don’t want to make a few .edu accounts a day to do their spamming, they can just buy .edu accounts in bulk for about 10 cents per. No one is making thousands of kbin accounts to spam from, they make a handful a day, and use them till they get banned. Then they make a few more.

.edu accounts are a terrible way to try and prevent spam on kbin. There is literally an industry around generating fake .edu accounts. You can buy them in bulk. Some colleges receive 10’s of thousands of fake applications a month trying to get free .edu emails.

Idk, maybe. But i think you may have issues with tolerances and reproducibility. With analog and neutral nets your going to have edgecases where some devices will give vastly differing outcomes. For something that’s fine but not for others.

I think you’re thinking 4 year college, not 2 years. It takes a lot of effort and money to apply to a 4 year school. It takes like 5 minutes to apply at your local community college online and get a .edu email address, and it’s free.

Using .edu as some sort of validation is a terrible idea because it’s something anyone can get with just a few minutes of work.

Remember it’s not the school that won’t pony up, it’s your local and state government that aren’t giving them an appropriate budget.

Also keep in mind that most grant money comes with stipulations. I remember many years ago (late 90’s or early 00’s) we got a big grant for computers in the classroom. Good chunk of money. But it had to be spent on computers, and only computers. Would have been nice to get some furniture to put them on. We had some in the back of the classrooms next to the sink, some we put 2 desks set front to front (it was not level) It was janky, but the computers were nice.

Hopefully being a community thing and not a corporate thing will help. I think people will be less likely to steal, and more likely to rat someone out for stealing.

Any time I tried to get someone to check out Reddit, I hated having to preface it with, oh and you’re going to want to block these 30 subs, they’re horrible, and here’s another 100 that are kinda gross, I’ll email you my list…

There’s stuff to block, but there’s stuff that should be banned too. I remember recommending some of the SQL reddits to coworkers just weeks before the jailbait crap hit the national news. It’s up to ernest how he wants to run this place, but I hope we don’t let the bar go too low.

I sent him one a few months ago, and it was gone within a few hours. I think he cares, but is swamped and probably gets a ton of BS.

It needs to be acted on though. We don’t want this to become a nazi bar. I hope he can figure out a way to share the load sometime soon.

Like how hard would it be to say that the admin’s behavior was unacceptable and it will be discussed internally. It seems clear to me (and most other posters there) that it was a one sided issue.

I’m not really sure where is good. It was nice to see some non-admins speaking up about it, but seeing the other admins circling the wagons when one of them is clearly in the wrong makes me weary of doing any more than lurking. 10A wouldn’t last 5 minutes there, but you have to worry about being berated if you’re not as far left as the admins even if you’re respectful.
