Yandex source code:
jesus fucking christ lmao why on earth did they not think to remove their super racist code before open sourcing it.
“oh yeah make sure racist dave’s commits are checked before we upload to github”
(edit: wait what projects are these? couldnt find em on datalens dir)
This pretends to be a source code which was leaked earlier, not what they open sourced.
Okay so maybe they did get racist dave to check through his old commits then
holy fuck! that’s being racist for no reason at all
That is interesting, assuming that it isn’t what it appears, perhaps it is a language barrier, since Yandex is Russian, they might have just come up with a special class of triggers, and didn’t realize the they were using one of the most offensive words in the English language.
That’s probably too charitable of an interpretation, but I could see myself making that mistake against another language.
You know what, I take that back. Looking at what the code is doing, that feels intentional. It looks like they replaced the term slave, and I can’t see a situation where you would replace the word slave with that word accidently.
I’m afraid it’s a common synonym for slave for many people. It’s not always a question of racism, it’s a question of analogy. Noone would think of it as something happening today, you go back to those days with your mind. It’s like you say “you’re sadist like an inquisitor”. That does not mean all religious people todays are disgusting people. English and american people feel probably more guilty using that word cause it’s in their recent history compared to Europe where it happened during ancient history.
Yandex isn’t just Russian anymore. It partially belongs to Ukraine and its developers as well. Aren’t you aware?
You are completely wrong.
So tell me where does your info come from?
And are you trying to say there are NO Ukrainian developers working for Yandex???
Before that, please provide sources that ysndey partially belongs to Ukraine and is not “russian anymore”.
Are you thinking that anything that originated in Russia must be some homogeneous mass that can only be contained there?
My friend works for them. Guess where he’s from?
And why is it such an unbelievable thing really? Is it not possible for a giant company to employ people from different backgrounds? Or does it make you feel uncomfortable knowing that some Russians and Ukrainians still work together? I’m quite perplexed it’s even a debate at this point. There’s nothing to argue about, mate.
How does the fact that it employs some people who aren’t russian make it a less-russian company? I’m from Canada and at one point worked for an American company - did that make it a Canadian company? Your premise is invalid.
You made a statement that yandex is not Russian company any more and partially belongs to Ukraine. This is bullshit. Read Wikipedia article about yandex, it’s “золотая акция” (golde stock) and who owns this “stock” noe, read about its official status of critical company for Russia. Then go to russian IT communities and read how yandex became more and more “controlled” by the government.
If you value privacy then you definitely shouldn’t use Kremlin service for mass surveillance aka Yandex
That’s an old rant: woukd you trust US services after the NSA scandal? All govs are s**t today
I guess that depends on which power your agenda aligns with. That power is generally a safe choice, compared to services from a power where your agenda is orthogonal.
Search with Google, it will show you news from FOX and CNN, apart it’s not the same if the Kremlin spy you or the NSA, last one affect you directly, the KGB won’t visit you for a Lemmy post. These guys aren’t even interested in a Western drug deal. Apart, Yandex has by far the best and most complete image search engine of all others, seen, using an extension front-end Yandex is problematic for Rusian people, like Google for the West.
American services at least do not hide or lie about war crimes in their search engines and services and do not play along with Russian propaganda
What? They totally do. Look at all the US propaganda about the Vietnam war, the Iraq war, the Afghanistan war, and the destruction of civilian lives in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Or the anti-communist propaganda, destruction of communist and socialist communities, and murders by the US government of those who threaten to make a better world for the people. Look at all the instances of the US overthrowing foreign governments, the US interventionist policy that lead to them overthrowing the democratically elected socialist government of Chile as they back a military coup.
US search engines hide the truth on all this shit. They don’t outright block it, but they make it difficult to find, if they list it at all.
On Google, you can at least search for information about Vietnam or Iraq, and Google will give you articles about these crimes as well. If you search for the Bucha massacre or the bombing of Mariupol in Yandex, for example, you will find nothing, or propaganda that the Russians did nothing.
Snowden revealed the NSA had internal access to all the major US tech providers. All of them. Some of them cooperatively, some of them less cooperative. And that’s not even counting all the surveillance of all the undersea cables. Yes Yandex spies on you for Russia but let’s not pretend US search engines are some bastion of privacy.
