I agree, but then why would they not retracted their support? If it really was an honest mistake and they weren’t aware of the situation, I would think they would apologize, explain that they didn’t know, pull their support, and issue a statement about the kinds of values they want to promote in the FOSS world.
But instead, they have doubled down, the CEO himself. It’s very strange and concerning.
The weird thing for me is the financial support coming from Framework to Hyprland. It would be one thing if Framework was working with Hyprland to test compatibility and functionality on their machines and do specialized bug testing. They could kind of justify that from a purely technical stance.
But the fact that they picked a very niche project for no apparent reason to support with a significant monthly financial contribution is so strange. There are numerous other niche distros/projects that aren’t mired in controversy that Framework could have worked with, (Alpine, Void, ElementaryOS, etc.) so why Hyprland/Omarchy?
Very disappointed. I’ve been pushing Framework computers very strongly for friends and family over the last year, plus I’ve been planning on getting one to replace my aging Thinkpad. Now I am going to hold off until the dust settles on this.
Godot all the way. Roblox is not the future, and it’s owned and controlled entirely by a corporation. Your creations are owned by the corporation, and will be used to make them money, don’t be a sucker and build their next hot mini-game.
Godot is fully Open Source and community controlled. It is a real proper game engine with some really powerful features. It is harder to get started using, but there are hundreds of great tutorials for complete beginners that you can follow, and tens of thousands of community assets to get you started quickly.
The community is very welcoming and friendly to newbies, and Godot is taken more and more seriously as a real game engine, especially by indie devs and studios.
Steam Deck easily. Everything you said you’re worried about Valve possibly doing in the future goes double for Microsoft.
Steam Deck is a great platform for playing any games on, pirated included. I have my whole GBA ROM collection on my Deck and play them through RetroArch, works perfectly.
I only mentioned it because it’s what I’ve been using for a while and it’s been a good experience so far. Cheap, runs well on Linux, and is one of the few that still allows you to port forward.
There are several good ones to pick from, defs would stay away from Nord because of their advertising practices, but Mullvad is solid. I think they removed port forwarding though.
Don’t subject your family to nasty letters in their mail from your ISP. You won’t go to jail, but you might risk your internet service getting canceled, which won’t be a fun conversation with your parents.
If you’re 18 and healthy, go donate plasma at a local clinic. In the USA depending on where you are, you can make $40-$80 per week, sometimes even more if they have a big shortage. Takes about 90 minutes a session, and you just chill with a needle in your arm and browse on your phone, super easy.
Proton VPN’s most expensive plan is $108 for 2 years, you can afford that. Go to your friends or neighbors and offer to do some yard work for cash. Mow their lawn, shovel bark, dig up dead shrubs, whatever. That’s the main way I made money when I was in my teens. People will pay 20-30 bucks an hour in most places for that kind of work, so a few hours of that in a week or two and you’ve got your $108 for Proton VPN, or whatever other VPN you want to use.
Sell some crap on eBay, FB marketplace, Craig’s List, etc. Old clothes, computer parts, consoles, weights, people will buy anything. You’d be surprised how fast I’ve gotten rid of junk buy posting it online for 10 bucks.
I’ll check it out. Even if it doesn’t work conceptually, it’s still cool to think about alternatives to the Capitalist markets and currencies that are dominant.
For a large scale, permanent anarchist society to form, (like hundreds of thousands to millions of people), a seismic shift in mentality must happen. On the scale of people moving from monarchism to democracy, and feudalism to capitalism.
For most of human history, slavery was considered a foundational aspect of society, people couldn’t even imagine society without it. An average ancient person would have thought you were absolutely crazy to suggest that a large scale civilization could work well and be prosperous without slavery. Same with a monarch, same with changing a feudalistic system to a market-based capitalistic system.
My dream is that one day, people will look back at current the era of statism in the same way that we look back at the days of slavery or absolute monarchism. That one day people would be shocked that the average person believed statism was the only way to organize a society.
The best we can hope for right now is to keep educating people, and work to act out anarchism in our daily lives with others. Participate in mutual aid networks. If nothing like that exists in your area, find a few like-minded folks and form one. Support open source, decentralized software and forms of media. Oppose hierarchical systems around you, subvert capitalistic markets and companies, protest and fight alongside fellow leftists and try to sway them to our side.
We will likely never enjoy the shade of the tree we are planting, but if it grows and blossoms one day into a great canopy, our efforts will have been forever worth it. And if not, then at least we can say we lived our lives true and free, fighting for the way things ought to be.

My policy is double my download, minimum. But I almost always hit much higher than that, my average is probably between 5-10x
All my torrents are public sites, and I only torrent pretty common stuff, so I don’t feel too bad about killing a torrent after a week or two. I figure 5-10x average on easy-to-find, mid quality media is plenty in the karmic sense lol.
As far as I am concerned, always give better than you get, even if that’s 1.01 but try to aim higher.
Of course, if you’re seeding a rare or otherwise hard to find piece of media, then you should keep it alive for longer. I am in the process of upgrading my torrent machine, and once that happens, I will be able to hold far more active torrents, and my average ratios will be significantly improved.

Valve doubling down on Linux as the default OS on the Steam Deck was such a great decision. It obviously has given them a massive competitive edge. Windows has become so horribly bloated, and Microsoft has almost zero interest in making it run more efficiently.
Yet again, FOSS showing why it’s always the way to go vs proprietary tech. So glad I started my self-hosting journey with Jellyfin!

InnerTune uses YouTube music, so far it’s been really good. No sign in, no ads, decent quality, and grabs alternative versions like covers and acoustic versions too.
It allows you to download the songs, build a library, create playlists, and you can free listen to related music.

“Hacking” is essentially effective and insightful tinkering. All great hackers in history have been insatiability curious about how things work.
They poke and prod and test and experiment, and every now and then, they find something interesting. Unexpected behavior, hidden code, useful bugs, etc.
Exploiting software vulnerabilities is only a small segment of hacking. Figuring out how to hook up a Raspberry Pi to your thermostat to control it remotely is hacking. Splicing a custom microcontroller into your old keyboard to give it all sorts of extra functions is hacking. Flashing a custom BIOS onto your GPU to unlock special overclocking features is hacking.
If you want to be great at “hacking” including software exploits, you need to understand computers at a deep level. You need to study electronics, logic, low level programming like Assembly and C, networking, circuits, operating systems and kernels, compilers, parsers, abstraction layers, encryption, and more.
The more concepts you learn and understand, the more interesting insights you will get from poking around, and the better you’ll get at using and developing tools to do even more advanced and interesting things.
There is no fast track, you have to take it slow and steady. Know what a computer is. Not the physical object, the abstract concept of a computer, a Von Neumann architecture, a Turing machine, what it means to be Turing complete, what is “code” and how does a static collection of tiny gates run it? The more stuff you skip, the worse you’ll be. But if all you want is the aesthetic of a “hacker” then just install Kali Linux, open the terminal and run tmux with a few panes, start btop, cmatrix, and neofetch in them. Put on a hoodie. Dim your lights and hunch over the keyboard for maximum effect.
