Nest has said these products will continue to work as “dumb” thermostats. You can walk up to them and turn the temp up and down. You just can’t access them from your phone or the web anymore.
It’s still ridiculous, but at least it’s as good as a non-smart thermostat.
Honestly I wish Google had never have been allowed to buy Nest. They ruin everything they touch.
Ahh I was worried they would lose functionality completely so that’s better than nothing, but also not what people originally paid for when they bought these products.
Google sure does love to kill projects don’t they?
You’re right, there are often good alternatives available for those who want smart devices with more longevity. The extra info helps for making informed purchases!
Same planned obsolescence, different product. My non-smart thermostat works great and will for years to come.

You can have Smart Thermostats (or Smart devices in general) that aren’t subject to planned obsolescence
Like building your own based on ESP32 https://github.com/smeisner/smart-thermostat
Or just buying ones that advertise “Full local control”
