I haven’t played Minecraft since 2015, but I get the feeling I might again in the new few years as I wanna find new hobbies. I know that game has changed a whole lot but I don’t have any official online data on it.
I’ve had this Microsoft account for over a decade and its probably full of personal information that I wanna let go of, I’ve already exported all my data. I would need to pay $30 for another copy of Minecraft, same price I paid in 2013. I just did a bunch of searching and its not possible to transfer my Minecraft license to another account.
I lost my minecraft account when I refused to migrate from mojang to Microsoft. I should own a copy, therefore piracy is morally justified. Minecraft overall was supposed to be an indie game with self-hosted servers, but it gradually became enshittified when Microsoft bought it.
Minecraft has stayed amazingly unshitified. Microsoft took two paths for Minecraft. They kept and updated the open Java version and developed a completely separate enshitified version that nevertheless can interact with the Java version using free open source server software.
If all products were done this way, the world would be a better place.
Requiring you to register with a real phone number, bothering you with logging in globally, linking your minecraft account to your entire windows PC (thank God for Linux), and introducing special features in a microtransaction-riddled version of the game is just the early middle stage of enshittification. Next comes removal of old features as more players switch to bedrock to enjoy the new special features.
The Java edition is in the middle of being phased out. They’ve only kept it for this long because bedrock is inferior and unplayable on most devices. It may look like Microsoft kept it out of kindness, but I assure you it will be gone soon.
Java version will never be phased out. The entire modding community is built on it. If java version dies, the community dies. Leaving microsoft with nothing but fortnite kids.
The Java edition is in the middle of being phased out
They have been releasing updates with new features to the Java version every 3 months.
but I assure you it will be gone soon.
It’s been 11 years dude.
MS eventually ruins everything. But Minecraft has lasted unshitified longer than some open source projects. I’m not going to stop using Jellyfin just because in 20 years it will turn into Plex.
As someone who spent a lot of time playing, modding and hosting java Minecraft, may I introduce you to Luanti?
And for a really rather Minecraft-like experience, you can install VoxeLibre in Luanti.
If you you play on servers, there is a setting to allow unlicensed users to play via alternative launchers. Have been doing that since I lost my account during the microsoft migration.
For minecraft, there exists a very big second hand account selling market out there, accounts typically cost around the range of 10$, you can go for that route if you don’t want any of your payment information given to Microsoft.
Though you can very well just let your Microsoft account stay only for Minecraft, you can change your nick after all. You’ll need a Microsoft account to play Minecraft anyways, whether it’s your old account or a new one. You also can edit any information you find too personal on your Microsoft account.
Piracy is also a solution, but you don’t get to connect to most multiplayer servers, you can only play on those that have authentication disabled (offline-mode).
Username history is public info for Minecraft accounts, using Mojang’s API.
I feel like buying another minecraft account is still giving Microsoft your data, so I am unsure there is purpose to deleting the current account if it’s what you’re worried about?
Unless you’re actively engaging in public minecraft servers and you don’t want people to know it’s you, I don’t see the point of buying another account.
If you’re just playing singleplayer all the time then there are ways to play minecraft without having an official account.
You can play Minecraft using custom Launchers that don’t check for account premium status, unless you play on big servers which require premium accounts it’ll work basically the same, and if you wish to play online you can find plenty of servers which support playing online without premium status.
