Recently my email account and Facebook have been compromised. The hackers used it to set up a linked Instagram account.

Whatever they have done has lead to the account being suspended (my friends can’t see my profile and I’m locked out of both Facebook and FB messenger).

I’m in the process of appealing the suspension via data protection authorities in my country. My question is this:

What are the hackers likely to be trying to achieve by setting up a linked Instagram account (which has now been suspended anyway)?

Are they trying to set up a bogus profile for nefarious purposes? Is it just a nuisance act? Is there some sort of gain on their part?

I now have regained access to my email and Instagram and have secured them, but not the suspended Facebook account. As I mentioned, this is tmstill locked.
