My philosophy is if a technology is useful in your life as a tool then use it. If you’re just entertaining yourself or passing time, don’t.
I strive to use my phone only for reading books and other real learning, and comms with IRL people and some internet fuckers. I use my computer for development mostly. I don’t have anything else, no tablet, no TV, nothing. Everything else is just refrigerators, dumb stuff that just does what it does. No distractions.
Unfortunately I don’t stick to that rule steadfastly, hence me replying in this thread
Respect. That’s an admirable goal. Do you notice a difference in how you feel about life from when you follow your tech diet strictly vs when you’re more lax?
Most of my day is spend away from technology, but I noticed I read less in the evenings than I did before I had internet at home.
Well, yeah I spend more time present in the real world when I’m more strict about it. But I’m an outdoor cat, I spend a lot of time outside anyway. I read more books too when I’m more strict, I have an admirable library but it’s all epubs and stuff, no physical books. I’d say I enjoy the discussion online and stuff but restricting it makes me happier and more productive.
