Nostr migration will gain most or many of us as in the post
Gab freeforum: https://gab.com/groups/72118
Freeforum is on scored but kinda inactive: https://scored.co/c/freeforum
(edit: I feel Scored is kind of dead as it’s not federated, but it would be good to get people from there to Nostr temporarily)
ExplodingHeads backup Scored community (?): https://scored.co/c/explodingheads
We can migrate to other Lemmy or Kbin instances (recommended ones?)
Any other forums to check out from the Reddit Alternatives sticky?https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1467a5s/find_alternatives_for_ourselves_megathread_third/

Are you interested in running Rabbit Hole with me? It isn’t very active right now, so this community is free to inhabit it and you can maintain the same culture. The users who visit it now are from Saidit, which has a pretty similar culture anyway. Perhaps it’d be a nice addition to Nostr. This way, the openness of a forum is maintained (rather than the microblogging format that revolves around popularity / networks), but you don’t have to be guests with a single subforum. We can discuss how to run it and you can request / make forums. If people migrate, at the outset it would mostly be people from here who make use of it, and I want to get people from related communities involved as well.
I’m interested, but also was thinking this might be an opportunity to back away from forums a bit for me
we have already bounced from forum to forum quite a bit
well what are your thoughts on nostr
the reason why nostr was liked was to prevent us from having to keep bouncing around as much
My first impression of it wasn’t so good. The only android app that’s distributed on f-droid is Amethyst but that doesn’t have group support, nor did any of the other apps I tried. Some of the apps are only distributed on the Play Store, which I’m avoiding. It was only when I tried satellite.earth that I discovered Nostr supports groups to begin with. But then that still didn’t work on Android. Also, that interface hijacks your attention even more than Lemmy. It feels like you’re browsing 9gag when the memes take the centre place.
I would still advice that a link to exploding heads on Satellite is placed in the sticky, though. At least that gives an experience similar to forums.
Play Store, which I’m avoiding
same
also I read amythest’s privacy report and they send data to google it sounds like lol
The app may collect a per-device token, your public key, and a preferred Relay to connect to and provide push notification services through Google’s Firebase Cloud Messaging.
https://github.com/vitorpamplona/amethyst/blob/main/PRIVACY.md
is that anything or a nothingburger
It doesn’t point to malintent. It means they make use of Google Play Services, but which is bad for privacy. The solution is to flash your device with a ROM that doesn’t have Play Services, if that’s possible, or to disable all the permissions for Play Services. But then you’ll receive notifications with a delay, which is probably okay for an app like Amethyst. But even Session needs to use Play Services to deliver notifications in realtime.
Do you have any plans for yourself?
all the OP ones
lemm.ee looks most tolerant of the bigger lemmies maybe
bluedwarf.top is a little text only cozy forum
I “back up” my posts to my computer, then just do a keyword file search to find stuff if I ever want to repost places
Some of the reddit alternatives sound interesting (discuit, squabblr, etc.) even if they have the same problems that may doom them eventually; I just havent gotten to experimenting with too many other forums I guess
I got banned by lemm.ee in the first week
Federation is overrated. It sounds like a good idea, but it’s terrible in practice. I miss p2p. I guess we call that “distributed” now.
I know BDFL isn’t ideal, but if it’s based on FOSS, we’re good.
Take basic forum software, if shit goes sour, the community can always spin up a new one and migrate. Sure, you don’t get the greater web all mingling in the same place as is the case with federation (kinda) and reddit.
But really, why do we need the rest of the world? We can each have our own corner, sure, the circlejerk effect is real, but it’s also fun. If we want other opinions we can go visit those other people in their space. And, of course, there’s always the giant monolths of X, Facebook, Reddit, what have you.
No real need to have everyone be part of the same instance, federation, or whatever.
Federation is just a tool to make sanitized spaces but claim that they aren’t censoring anyone, when they in fact are. They’re perfect for creating sanitized leftist “utopian” spaces, and atrocious for freedom.
The idea of Nostr with full decentralization is a good one, the only problem though is that currently it’s a Twitter type format and even though it added communities it still doesn’t have any kind of frontend to access it like a forum, the ones that do are just hacks using hashtags as communites, which they are not, hashtags aren’t communities and they aren’t like communities. We need something equivalent to Lemmy but for Nostr.
