Please create a new account on monero.town and post your old (or new) monero.town username with your monero.house account in this thread.

I am sorry for the hassle, Lemmy completely breaks down if the domain name changes, which was sadly necessary because the old .house domain was creating huge trouble (it was used by a russian crypto scam in 2018 and is thus on many, many blocklists).

monero.house will start redirecting to monero.town by the end of the month.

By this point you wont be able to use your monero.house account anymore so please act quickly!

Of course you don’t need to pay the XMR registration fee again if you have already done so on house.

If you come to this thread after monero.house has started redirecting to monero.town either do the usual social media verification again or if you have paid with XMR and still have the tx_id, provide that again. If you paid with XMR and don’t have the tx_id anymore, contact @monerobull:matrix.org on matrix.

This is a one-time thing, I don’t expect that we will ever have to do something like this again.

I plan for Monero.Town to stick around for a long time.

Edit 27.06.2023:

Monero.House is now offline.

This was a very I’ll advised move. The timing couldn’t be worse, with the reddit debacle, the subreddit private, and the pressure for users to outflow somewhere, you may have completely ruined any possibility of this site becoming a key part of the community. I really want to see something replace the subreddit, so I’m hopefully disappointed in this move.

I did something like this once accidentally for a community I used to admin for, and we never recovered. I hope that’s not the case for this site. Doing it early before building a big userbase is a good idea if it’s the best you can do and you have to, so you have that going for you. As an admin you have to do that due diligence beforehand, I hope this can be a learning experience for you while not costing what it could’ve, but if so you’ll be pretty lucky.

Appreciate the concern but I feel like the old domain being blacklisted by a bunch of DNS servers hurt growth way more than this migration (we have 99 users registered on house and already 58 on town within 2 days!). Trust me, if there had been a way to migrate everything over, I would have done that instead. It wasn’t an easy decision to move away from house but better to take the hit now than have a bunch of people write off the fediverse completely because they cant even reach the domain and also annoy way more users down the line.

Now we have a clean domain, a way stronger server and I’m more familiar with Lemmy. I can tell you with confidence that monero.town will be running for years to come :D

Well, I’ll be using it and hopefully the broader community will make extensive use of it.

I just really adamantly think that the Monero community needs a place that isn’t reddit to center its discussion, and what that means is a really committed community member willing to admin such a place. This site is the best shot we have had at that in a long time.

          Oh I am committed 😎

Jokes aside, I feel exactly the same way, that’s why I had .house set up months before this storm of interest caused by the API changes :)

Figured out for the second time that lemmy doesn’t like dashes in their usernames. First time I decided to use underscores, now its just itsmect.

Glad that we moved, new instance is much more snappy. Exited to see where this goes!

Success! Just wondering, is it possible to replicate the existing communities and posts from the old instance?

Also additionally, I tried Jerboa with just using monero.town as the instance url and it worked straight away with no changes. Seems the DNS blocking was the issue.

Posts could technically be crossposted but any links to the instance will break once the house server shuts down. Since many posts are mostly relevant at the time they were posted, reposting them weeks later also just doesnt make much sense imop. I would have restored everything if it was as simple as migrating the database but since that isn’t the case, might as well start fresh!

Communities can be created by anyone, I didn’t do many pre-created ones this time to have them srping up more organically :)

It’s great to finally have a clean domain.

Seems like I can’t read any posts on any other community. No matter which one, as soon as I log out or visit their community on their Lemmy instance I can see all the comments in a thread. Is this normal?

Existing comments dont get loaded in if they were made before federation started, I saw the same thing happening when I first enabled federation on house. New ones should show up though :)
