This is impressively damning. Not that any of us are surprised, of course. But, the tidbit about RIF reaching out to initiate an agreement to pay Reddit, which just happened to be dissolved a year after Huffman became CEO is 👌
Yeah, that one really surprised me.
I knew that RiF had to rename at some point and I just figured that’s when Reddit took issue with the trademark infraction of all Reddit apps, which would have kind of been fair enough. But that the RiF dev actually had a separate deal, and his app was already called “Reddit is Fun” (which users almost certainly wouldn’t mistake for the official app),
and that deal still got cancelled – I don’t get that one.I remember the name change but had no idea it was about that. I thought it was pretty obvious it wasn’t an official reddit app, but I guess that’s fair but definitely shows as a series of moves to wall off the brand and product.
Spez is continuing to dig his grave with every new interview. The PR team at Reddit needs to learn to keep this guy OUT of the media, he’s terrible with damage control.
Not directly related, but I just realized spez publicly claimed that Selig threatened Reddit and how this is really bad for their continued relationship and whatnot…
…mere days before they started threatening moderators.
A venture capitalist would have to be a moron to invest with Huffman on board. This guy simply cannot shut his mouth. Bad move after bad move, over and over.
Huffman’s motivation here puzzling. On the face of it, he’s giving everyone that he’s beefing with the opportunity to prove that he’s being underhanded.
It seems likely that his ego and hurt feelings are getting in the way of any business sense. Great way to talk an IPO. What a prick he is.
I was on Reddit 13 years and it’s unfortunate that it’s come to this. It looks to me like they’re trying to drum up BS arguments against the 3rd party app developers in order to discredit them and make Reddit seem less shitty for deciding to force people into their app. I’ll miss it, but I won’t support that kind of behavior.
