Fediverse memes@feddit.uk•I normally stay away from the fedi-drama communities, but once in a while...English
42·7 days agoThe threadiverse is made up of multiple servers (instances) run by individuals or small groups but are all distinct and have their own rules, themes, enforcement and sometimes ideologies and they are all interconnected. Think of email providers where youll have gmail, proton, yahoo and privately run email servers where they can all talk to each other but each is distinct.
This setup is great for censorship resistance and breaking “platform lockin” that mainstream social media loves. But in some ways not so great because anyone can setup an instance that means you can have toxic instances with toxic ideologies such as MAGAt/right-wing aligned instances or other authoritarian instances.
On the Threadiverse there are 3 instances known as “The Tankie Triad” they are lemmy․ml, Hexbear and Lemmygrad. Their ideology is aligned with authoritarianism and praise/defend authoritarian countries such as Russia, NK and China (and even denies the word authoritarian is legit, often saying it’s just a CIA psyop or flops to “ALL governments are authoritarian!”). They also constantly spread Russian propaganda, such as that Russia was justified to invade Ukraine or denial of genocides those governments committed. They frequently conflate themselves as “the only true communists/leftists”.
Hex and grad are widely defederated from (which means other instances block accepting communities, content, votes and user submissions from them. Akin to an email provider blocking another rouge/spammish one.) because of how excessive they are about their views, often giving death threats, harassment and general negativity to those they deem won’t align with their views
Lemmy․ml is similar, but is way more subtle about it because the admins are also the devs of the Lemmy software (and are hardcore tankies themselves), often opting to just censor and ban people who don’t align with their views or dares to call out their misinformation, authoritarianism or even just saying something like TASS or RT is Russian propaganda (which is frequently posted there). You can’t even say Trump is a Russian agent over there without being censored (which is the top thread in the screenshot). They still frequently yell at people they deem to be “liberals” (anyone who doesn’t align with their authoritarianism) to “go back to Reddit”
[email protected] is a place to document what they say and do and therefore, like all authoritarians in regards to things that document them, hate it
Here’s a big mega thread that documents lemmy․mls shenanigans
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tankie
Tankie is a pejorative label generally applied to authoritarian communists, especially those who support or defend acts of repression by such regimes, their allies, or deny the occurrence of the events thereof.

AI is like any other tool, in the hands of an expert for whatever domain they’re using it for, good things can happen.
But like any other tool, in the hands of an amateur, who knows what could happen lmao

I’d be happy to just see where humanity ends up in a few hundred years. And if we have achieved FTL travel I’d be ecstatic to get a small ship and start my Space Pirate dream lmao
I cannot express into words how much a loath Lemmy’s image proxying system
Well clearly the problem is you’re getting fansubs and not funsubs like OP said!

Why am I cross-posting .ml content?
I cross-post from .ml to the nearest relevant non-.ml comm to reduce the influence of .ml comms and indirectly, the instance as a whole, to help vitilize non-.ml comms and make it an easier decision for other instance admins to defederate because one key reason I identified that admins don’t want to defederate is because .ml still has some very large comms and some active niche comms.
Some highlights from the link:
.ml admin, Nutomics continued transphobia https://lemmy.world/post/29222558 The original transphobic Comment from Nutomic: https://lemmy.world/post/18236068
“If you don’t support Russia then you just don’t understand geopolitics” ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/27352415
"Don’t worry guys, the Uyghur Genocide was REALLY just birth control! ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/30580167
“See! nobody died IN Tiananmen Square, just AROUND it, so it doesn’t count!!” ~ Davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/30673342
“NK is actually good and anything counter to that is Western propaganda!” ~dessalines, .ml admin, dev https://lemmy.world/post/31595035
General negative sentiment to other instances who haven’t “seen the way” yet ~davel, .ml admin https://lemmy.world/post/27426510
And so so much documentation on clear heavy handed censorship and bias also on the link. So much I can’t even put them all here because this comment would be really long.
I believe the behavior of its admins (the main admins are Lemmy devs) does harm to the overall growth of the Lemmy-verse and maybe even the Thrediverse (since Lemmy kinda kicked off the Thrediverse) because of its association with the devs of Lemmy and their insistence to use .ml as their personal political platform to spread harmful propaganda
On the outside, bringing up Lemmy frequently leads to comments like “Lemmy? Isn’t that the place with a bunch of tankies?” Or “Tried Lemmy, but found it full of pro Russia crap so I left”. The best way forward from that I see is to either widely defederate from .ml like the rest of the Triad, or pressure them to put a fair and unbiased as possible admin team.

Linux@programming.dev•Linux gaming is growing! The Roblox client Sober was downloaded 1.3 million times this year.
81·5 months agoYea that’s pretty much my extent of Roblox myself, playing with the kids.
It’s certainly something, some of the “experiences” are plain cash grabs (which I talk to them about) but I find quite a few to be genuinely fun, even if they’re absolute chaos sometimes lmfao

Privacy@programming.dev•What privacy/tech news podcasts/channels do you recommend?
23·6 months agoPart of my .ml cross-posting/boycott, this is a text only post and tricky to crosspost without linking back to the original .ml comm thus harming the boycotting efforts. So I settled on tagging the original user for accreditation as seen here to add that bit of friction, but still have that call back.
All other crossposts I do, do show up as crossposts properly.

Agreed, but hopefully they’re being used more for “Let’s pause for now while we figure out a good way to filter out true AI-Code-Kiddies slop from actual programmers using it as a proper tool” rather than perm bans
