Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Could One Nation's Farrer victory be the 'beginning of the end' for the Coalition?
1·4 days ago
https://www.abc.net.au/news/elections/farrer-by-election-2026
that’s true, didn’t realise how far back it was since nats last held it
Trying to find more info but it’s confusing
“Cut their tails off and send ’em back overseas,” she says bluntly.
As she speaks, Fantig gestures towards a man sleeping rough on the banks of the Murray River.
“They’re living in our homes while Australians can’t even find a rental,” she says. “As Aussie taxpayers, we’re the ones being discriminated against.”
The irony is baked into the geography. Fantig’s grievance is boiling over in one of the most “traditionally Australian” pockets of the country; more than 80 per cent of Farrer’s residents were born here, far higher than NSW’s 64 per cent average.
Shout out to the Knitting Nannas for Renewables group members Wendy Cole, Jennifer Huber and Vivien Chivers

4·4 days agolowest earning = wage majority + government assistance
average/middle = wage for pretty much majority, very little from anything else
upper class = still wage majority but more from dividends/trusts etc
elites = dividends, capital gains, trusts, other, and wages are all pretty close to each other in %

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Nearly 1.5 million migrants on benefitsEnglish
1·6 days agoBritain’s welfare bill has ballooned, with 23 per cent of the working-age population now in receipt of some form of benefits, figures analysed by The Independent reveal.
That would include the immigrants as well ?
You blocked me so I guess we’ll never know!

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Nearly 1.5 million migrants on benefitsEnglish
21·6 days agoIt’s also an indication of a civilised society when it looks after the less fortunate.
Yes when it has the capacity to do so, if the less fortunate outnumber the more fortunate eventually the society crumbles and you end up with a whole country full of less fortunates
Analysis by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) suggests the increase in welfare spending this year alone is equivalent to 15 advanced Royal Navy frigates, 220 fighter jets, or 250,000 soldiers’ salaries, more than three times the size of the regular British Army.
New figures show the cost of benefits and pensions will climb to around £333 billion this year, an increase larger than the annual budgets of several government departments combined.

37·6 days agoThe anti-immigrant Reform, meanwhile, had gained more than 350 seats across the local councils.
The Greens had more modest gains, picking up 23 seats by 10 a.m. local time (noon Israel time).
Yep agreed, inshallah the greens should do more tiktok videos to appeal to their extreme right religious and clueless progressive left fanbase

That’ll no doubt appeal to the country of the UK who has only benefited from immigration with zero drawbacks at all

United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Nearly 1.5 million migrants on benefitsEnglish
22·6 days agoWe should have more of these hard working people.
Immigrants who work yes definitely, those who don’t no thanks
The average immigrant is younger and there should be lower claimants, significantly lower, the benefits they bring should be overwhelming, otherwise what is the point
Labour is proposing to double the time before migrants are entitled to claim ILR from five to 10 years and to make it conditional on earning a wage, speaking English to a high standard and contributing to society.
Sounds fair to me?
If you want to support them you are free to donate your wages to the 1.5 million, I’m sure you’re got lots to spare
I looked it up and the number for UK citizens is 23%
23% of all UK citizens are on universal credit? Where did you get that number from?

Australian Politics@aussie.zone•Tax windfall from Iran war to be pocketed in federal budget
1·6 days agohttps://www.rba.gov.au/publications/bulletin/2023/mar/a-new-measure-of-average-household-size.html
(AHS = Average Home Size)
From late 2020
The increase in AHS at the onset of the pandemic abruptly reversed in late 2020, with AHS declining over the following two years from 2.55 individuals per household to a historical low of 2.48 individuals by August 2022. This trend could reflect an increase in the demand for space, as people spent more time at home, both due to pandemic-related health restrictions and the increased ability for some to work from home.3
The decline in AHS contributed to a sizeable increase in demand for the number of homes in Australia, which helped offset the relatively slow growth in the population during the pandemic (Graph 4).4

wonder if we will see if AHS is even smaller in next census

We have the most housing per person we’ve ever had: https://www.housingdata.gov.au/ (Well, 2022 vs 1990)
isn’t it also the lowest per person it has ever been?
during covid when the gates were shut and prices dropped everyone rushed out and bought a house or unit so we had record prices before even reopening up
lots of singles now taking 2 bedroom places for the bed and home office
that and immigration being higher than average and materials and labour wages
